Our purpose at BecomingX is to help people realise their potential. To show that everyone is capable of extraordinary things when challenge is embraced. On 25 October 2025, 55 individuals from across the globe had the opportunity to live that mission in one of the most unique environments on Earth.
A staggering 1,120m below sea level, in the tunnels of Boliden’s Garpenberg mine in Sweden, this extraordinary group completed the World’s Deepest Marathon. Ranging in age from their early 20s to their 60s they endured temperatures of 24°C at 72% humidity and ran in total silence with only their headtorches for light. For many, it was their first time stepping inside a mine. For others, it was their first marathon – what a way to start!
In a moment that perfectly captured the surreal nature of the environment, content creator Seapeekay even streamed Minecraft live from inside the mine, bringing a global online audience along for the adventure. His broadcast brought a completely new dimension to the challenge, allowing thousands of viewers to experience the mine in real time and showcasing just how unique the environment was.
Amongst the runners was our own CEO, Paul Gurney, who had this to say:
“Descending into the mine that morning, I felt a mix of excitement and nervous respect - this wasn’t just a marathon, it was a test of what people are capable of. Running far below the surface, through darkness and heat, reminded me that when you take on a big challenge and push past comfort zones, you discover strengths you never knew you had.
What also struck me was that this challenge was only possible because of how far the mining industry has come. The innovation, safety, and professionalism inside the mine created an environment that made this much safer than people might imagine. To help 55 people become world record holders shows what’s possible.”
This event was a great reminder that we aren’t just capable of enduring pressure – we can thrive under it. And thrive they did.
Two Guinness World Records were broken. For both:
The Deepest Underground Marathon Distance Run (Team)
But the impact didn’t stop at the finish line. Thanks to the remarkable efforts of our runners and supporters, to date over $500,000 has been raised for the BecomingX Foundation and Wild at Heart Foundation - enabling them to continue to make a difference to people and animals across the globe.
The World’s Deepest Marathon was an event that brought together people of all different ages, from all different countries, backgrounds, industries. What a celebration of human capability and a powerful reminder that when you step into the unknown - sometimes literally - you discover what you’re truly capable of.
